My Brief Bio

Dr. Jeffrey Gemmell

returned to Millersville University of Pennsylvania in 2013, where he conducts three ensembles (University Choir, Chorale, and Cantilena Women’s Choir) and teaches Class Voice and Art of Choral Techniques. He completed a Research Leave from the College of Music at University of Colorado, Boulder, in 2014, editing the 32 anthems of early American composer, Johannes Herbst, composed in Lititz, PA from 1791-1811. This work is be published in 2018 by Steglein Publishing (Ann Arbor, MI) as two volumes in the series, Musical Treasures from Moravian Archives

Dr. Gemmell joined the faculty at CU-Boulder in 2009 and served as Associate Director of Choral Studies, where he conducted University Choir and taught Graduate Choral Symposium, Conducting and Advanced Conducting. Regular guest conducting, masterclass, and workshop appearances focus on his research interests: vocal-choral pedagogy, kinesthetic rehearsal techniques, historic performance practice, and music editing. Dr. Gemmell was Director of Choral Activities and Vocal Music at Millersville University of Pennsylvania (2006-09) and California State University-Chico (1999-2006). He held other college-level choral/music educations position at Ithaca College (1997-99), Cornell University (Spring 1999), and Metropolitan State College of Denver (1995-97).

Dr. Gemmell began his teaching career at St. Paul’s School for Boys in Brooklandville, MD (1984-87) and taught for four years at Centennial High School in Howard County, MD (1993-97). He holds degrees from CU-Boulder (D.M.A. in the Literature and Performance of Choral Music), Northwestern University (M.M. in Music Education; Artist’s Certificate in Voice) and Towson University (B.S. in Music Education).

Dr. Gemmell is the Organist/Choir Director and Director of Music Ministries at the Lititz Moravian Congregation in Lititz, Pennsylvania, and proudly sits on the Board of Trustees of the Moravian Music Foundation and the Advisory Board of the Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster.
